How often is the site updated?

The classifieds section (and the rest of the site) is updated in real time, as users post new ads, tour dates, news and other information. With current traffic levels, the site is updated about every thirty-five minutes.

Are ads successful?

Yes. Many people have formed bands, sold (and bought) instruments and played gigs as a result of ads posted here. A lot of very happy e-mail has been received by the canuckleheads after such events (always appreciated, btw).

Who typically posts here?

Indie bands and other players are the primary users of the classifieds section, but established music business people use it, too. Sony, BMG, Arista and Warner have all posted ads for musicians to tour and support with some of their marquee acts. As well, at least three rockstars have sold some of their gear through here.

How many people check this section out

Each day, across the whole site, 1000 Unique Visitors look at an average of 3.2 pages and download a total of about 328 megabytes of data. In July of 2002, 31762 people looked at 102384 pages and downloaded a whopping 10179219 bytes of data off our server. The Classified Ads Section gets about 40% of that traffic.

Why isn't HTML allowed in your ads any more?

In the original version of the classified ads section, HTML was allowed in ads so people could add bold, italics, underlines and hotlinks to their postings. Unfortunately, people abused this and started adding all sorts of crazy things. This was amusing for a while, but became irritating when some overly-ambitious punters put bad code in and screwed up the rest of the pages. As such, I've disabled all HTML tags, but still allow people to specify a URL when creating a new ad.

Why is there weird code in some of the ads?

The weird code represents people's efforts to add HTML to their ads.

There was a big problem for a while with people posting multiple ads. Will that still happen?

This shouldn't occur anymore. I've made a bunch of fixes to a process error that allowed that to happen, and I've trimmed out a lot of the older duplicate posts (leaving one ad in all instances). From now on, If people post the same ad multiple times in a way that abuses the system, I'll delete ALL of their ads.

Will you consider adding more categories?

If you think of another category that makes sense for the site, let me know. If I like it, I'll add it.

I don't understand what the big deal is. This page looks horrible in my browser. What's up with that?

This generation of the Classified Ads Section was created with Cold Fusion and SQL (as always), with some heavy-duty XML, XHTML (Transitional) and CSS thrown in to make me happy. There were a lot of reasons for doing this (which I would be ecstatic to discuss, if anyone is interested), but a small side-effect is that your browser (which is likely old and decrepit and desperately in need of an upgrade) doesn't display it properly. That being said, these pages should still be viewable and fully-functional in every browser on every platform; it just won't look as nice. Please consider upgrading your browser if you wish to view this site the way it is intended to be viewed. Any comments, please email me.

How can I give you my comments/ feedback/ suggestions?

Please either use the feedback page or get in touch with me by e-mail or post at the office.

Can I upload an image of my band/ self/ trombone/ sister with my ad?

This is not available at this time. If it's a desired feature, let me know.

What is next for the site? What other features do you plan on building, improving and/or introducing?

I have a tonne of ideas to make the site better on many different levels, but I need to see at least a bit of money coming in before I can put the time in which will be required to implement these ideas well.

Am I going to be charged any fee for using this service?

No. This service will always be free for individual musicians who want to connect with other musicians. I'm hoping that businesses and those rare musicians with money will purchase some Feature Ads.

Can I purchase an ad on your site?

Yes. And I encourage you to do so. To find out more about our Feature Ads, click here.

How can you offer this service for free?

I provide this service because I am a musician, educator and technologist who realizes how important it is to keep the music scene alive in Canada. If I can help musicians keep it going, then that is great. I created the site because it was needed, and because I wanted to show them that I could do it. Now, I keep it running because thousands of people across the country use it every day and, in a tiny way, I help to make a difference.

I have no cash, but I'd love to give something back. What can I do?

Volunteers help run parts of the site. If you're interested in helping out, let me know. As well, feel free to invite us to your shows, or send us CDs.

Cheers.
