| The Pikes emerged from Saskatchewan in 1984 with a jangly guitar-pop sound that R.E.M. made vogue and proceeded to record a series of gently melodic but ultimately flyweight albums before disbanding in 1993. The quartet's most enduring singles contained a modicum of melancholy (Girl With A Problem, Wait For Me, Hopes Go Astray), but their attempts at social and political commentary (Things I Do For Money, Let's Pretend) were as embarrassingly simplistic as their youth anthems (Teenland, Dancing in a Dance Club) were banal. |
