| Biography |
 | Naming your debut album poor li'l rockstar means that you've either got to have an incredible amount of confidence or a huge ego. The twelve songs that make up j. englishman's Warner Music Canada debut prove that he has a lot to be confident about.
The issue of his ego is still up for debate.
If music is a reflection of a musician's soul, poor li'l rockstar gives us a full dose of j. englishman. j. wrote the songs. j. sang the songs. j. played the guitars. j. programmed the beats. j. played the bass. j. produced the record.
Okay, he didn't actually do it all himself.
Dave Hodge produced the album with j. and help from engineer Matt DeMatteo. Some of Canada's best musicians (both renowned and unknown) came into the studio to help commit j.'s vision to tape, including guitarists Kurt Swinghammer, Tom McDonald and Christian Collingham, bassists Steve Webster, Mark Johnson and Brian Kobyakowa and drummers Randy Cooke and Lawrence Panzini Jr.. Damhnait Doyle also makes a guest appearance on backing vocals.
poor li'l rockstar will be forever known as the beginning of the j. englishman story, but the preface came two years earlier. It was the winter of 1998 and the Canadian music industry was gearing up for the annual Canadian Music Week (CMW) festivities. Bands had secured their showcase slots around Toronto hoping to score that revered record deal. A quirky little demo by a group called Tomorrow The World (TTW) was quietly making its way through the A&R offices. It remained a mystery who this band was but when they hit the stage at CMW it was clear that TTW was actually j. englishman, an as of yet unheard of local songwriter. Tomorrow The World's aural assault caught many in the audience off guard but beneath the volume it was clear that here was a songwriter worth keeping an eye on.
Over the course of the next two years, j. continued to refine his songwriting. He disbanded Tomorrow The World and began, instead, to perform his songs acoustically just his acoustic guitar and voice up on stage. His repertoire grew by leaps and bounds and the new material began to deliver on the promise of the initial demos. In the summer of 1999, j. signed with Warner Music Canada and immediately went into pre-production. It quickly became apparent that these songs were about to take on a life that could only be articulated by their performances.
Consider poor li'l rockstar as 'chapter one' in the j. englishman story. It's a story that many people didn't know they were waiting to hear. |
